UEFA Champions League is drawn! On Thursday, Viktoria got to know her opponents for this year’s group stage. In Group G, they will play against Real Madrid, AS Roma and CSKA Moscow. Matches will take place between September and December.
From Pot 1, Viktoria got most probably the toughest possible opponent – Real Madrid who won the competition in past three seasons. Fun fact is that Plzeň is going to face the UCL title holder again just like in previous two club campaigns.
The Spanish giant is also the most successful team in their country with 33 La Liga titles. Even after Cristiano Ronaldo‘s departure, there are still so many world-class players playing for Real, for example Luka Modrić or Sergio Ramos.
Next opponent is AS Roma and both clubs already have an experience with each other. In 2016/17 Europa League group stage, Viktoria tied the game 1-1 at home. Then at Stadio Olimpico in the Eternal City, Plzeň lost to AS 1-4.
The last opponent is CSKA Moscow, which is still remembered very well in Plzeň. During the second run of the Czech champions, Viktoria needed a win over CSKA on the final matchday of group stage. They did it and got through to the spring part of the Europa League, thanks to Tomáš Wágner’s late goal.
