Viktoria suffered a 2–1 defeat to Ferencváros in their second match of the Europa League league phase. After a goalless first half, Zachariassen scored twice for the hosts. Denis Višinský pulled one back in stoppage time, but Viktoria were unable to find an equaliser.
The hosts began today’s league phase encounter backed by a vocal home crowd. Cadu took a corner as early as the second minute. Ťapaj came out to claim the ball, but Dweh ultimately headed it clear. In the ninth minute, Sojka made a promising run, but Memić was developing the attack down the opposite flank. The move eventually ended in a goal kick. Two minutes later, Memić tried his luck from distance and won a corner. The delivery found an unmarked Pirgić, but his effort struck Kabongo in front of goal, allowing the hosts to regain possession. In the 15th minute, a misunderstanding in the Viktoria defence allowed Lisztes to get a shot away, but Ťapaj was alert to save his low effort.
In the 20th minute, Kabongo broke forward after the ball ricocheted off Cadu. He played it to Memić on the left, but his shot flew over the bar. Zachariassen got on the ball inside the box in the 35th minute, only to find Ťapaj well positioned once again. A minute later, Gabriel looked for Memić in the penalty area. Viktoria appealed for handball, but play continued. Gabriel then had a chance himself in the 38th minute. His first shot was blocked, while his second forced a save from the home goalkeeper.
In the 40th minute, Dweh conceded a free kick on the edge of the box, giving the hosts a dangerous set-piece opportunity. However, it produced no serious threat to goal. There was no further action of note before the break. Both sides had created chances, but the first half ended goalless.
In the 48th minute, Pirgić ran onto a pass and tried to find a teammate, eventually winning a corner for Viktoria. Unfortunately, a minute later, Memić lost possession and Birmančević set up Zachariassen, who fired past Ťapaj. The goal lifted the hosts, whose high pressing caused Viktoria considerable problems. The visitors refused to give up, however. In the 59th minute, Kabongo met Gabriel’s cross with a header, but his effort lacked power.
In the 65th minute, shortly after coming off the bench, Faal had a chance inside the six-yard box, but the goalkeeper managed to gather the ball. Gabriel sent in another cross towards Faal in the 68th minute, but his delivery was too long. In the 76th minute, Dweh committed a foul inside the penalty area, although the flag had already gone up for offside. Following a VAR review, a penalty was eventually awarded. Zachariassen stepped up and converted with a shot down the middle.
Višinský pulled one back in stoppage time. Viktoria kept pushing, with Červ trying his luck from distance, but his effort went straight at the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, there was no further breakthrough. Despite their late pressure, Viktoria were unable to find an equaliser and leave Hungary empty-handed.
