iktoria Plzeň welcomed Sparta Prague in the first round of the competition. The match ended in a 2:0 victory for Plzeň after Amar Memić and Pavel Šulc scored. Viktoria scored the first three important points in the fight for Champions League qualification.
The regular season was over and Viktoria was waiting for the extra time. The first opponent was Sparta from Prague. The visitors got their first chance when captain Martin Vitík got through after a deflected ball in the whitewash, but his shot went high over the bar. Viktoria scored a moment later. Prince Adu broke through the Spartan defence but was unable to get the ball into the net in the final stages.
The point was valuable for both teams and the match was not without some tough physical battles. In the 23rd minute, after a foul, the main referee awarded the first yellow card, to Emmanuel Uchenna. Four minutes later, Peter Vindahl prevented a goal joy when he pulled back a dangerous shot from Pavel Šulc, which was heading for the back post.
As the match progressed, Viktoria increased their intensity and created more chances. The ball was moving mostly in Sparta´s half, but the Red and Blues were unable to make more of it for a long time. Towards the end of the first half, there was a scuffle in Martin Jedlicka´s goalmouth, after which the Pilsen goalkeeper was left lying on the ground and had to be treated. During the incident, Cadu and Lukáš Červ received yellow cards. The Victorian fans got a goal after all. In the fifth minute of the setup, Amar Memić sent the ball into the net with a header and Viktoria went into the stands with a 1-0 lead.
Due to health problems, Martin Jedlička was unable to start the second half and was replaced in goal by Viktor Baier. In the 53rd minute Prince Adu hit the bar and was just a bit lucky to score. Less than five minutes later, Sampson Dweh found a centre in the whitewash and fired past Peter Vindahl, but the goal was called back due to offside after VAR intervention.
The Victorians continued to press and tried to add a second goal, shooting at the Spartan goal from all possible positions. Pavel Šulc came close to scoring again, but this time he failed. The goal came in the 66th minute when a deflected ball from Prince Adua reached him perfectly and Pavel Šulc sent it uncompromisingly between the three posts.
Pilsen tried to secure the victory with a final strike. Prince Adu had a great chance, dealing with two defenders, but his final shot flew over the bar. Then in the 78th minute, Matěj Ryneš unluckily fell on his right hand and had to leave the field, leaving Sparta to finish the match with ten players. The result did not change for the rest of the match. The Victorians were able to secure the victory and beat Sparta 2:0.
