In the first round of the Europa League group stage, Viktoria Plzeň traveled to Budapest, where they faced Ferencváros. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Rafiu Durosinmi scoring Plzeň´s only goal.
The European League group stage began for Viktoria with a match against their old rivals from Budapest. Both teams wanted to get off to a successful start in the competition, so the match was intense from the very first minutes. Plzeň could have taken the lead in the first minute when Amar Memić had a huge chance, but he missed the goal when trying to shoot past the goalkeeper. The game then swung from one side to the other, and the spectators saw a number of personal duels. After one of them, Merchas Doski sent a precise pass to Rafia Durosinmi, who found himself in a one-on-one situation. He dribbled past the last defender, guided the ball to the center, and fired a powerful shot past the home goalkeeper. He thus became Viktoria's first scorer in the new Europa League season.
After the goal, the pace of the game slowed down a bit, with most of the action taking place in the middle of the pitch. A major turning point came in the 37th minute when home player Cebrails Makreckis received a second yellow card and had to leave the pitch early. From that moment on, Viktoria had a numerical advantage. The players went into the locker rooms with a one-goal difference.
In the second half, the home coach sent former Plzeň player Cadu onto the pitch, who revitalized Ferencváros's play. Both teams increased the intensity and the referee had his hands full. In the 57th minute, Rafiu Durosinmi could have added a second goal when he got a good opportunity and tried to lob the goalkeeper, but the ball narrowly missed the goal. Coach Miroslav Koubek gradually changed the lineup, bringing Denis Višinský, Prince Adu, and Adrian Zeljković onto the pitch. Prince Adu could have secured the lead when he overpowered a defender, but his shot flew wide of the goal. Viktoria ultimately missed out on three points in stoppage time. In the last minute, home striker Pešič equalized with a header, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
